Microsoft Game Studios and 4Kids Entertainment, Inc  today celebrate the introduction of "Viva Piñata," a high-energy, mass-appeal entertainment property created by Rare that brings a vibrant world of living piñata animals to video games, television and beyond. The "Viva Piñata" universe showcases an engaging cast of colorful, wild-roaming piñata animals that entertain and challenge imaginations.

"Viva Piñata" will offer a number of entertainment elements enjoyable for everyone — from kids to adults. The "Viva Piñata" world will include a Saturday morning 3-D animated television series, slated to premiere this fall on 4Kids TV on FOX, that is produced and created by 4Kids Entertainment, known for such powerhouse properties as Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokémon®, Cabbage Patch Kids and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. An immersive video game developed by Rare exclusively for the Xbox 360 scheduled to debut this holiday worldwide, enabling gamers to create and customize piñata-filled adventures in their own evolving world. The 4Kids Entertainment licensing program will result in additional licensed products launching in 2007. Additional information can be found at http://www.vivapinata.com.

"With 'Viva Piñata,' we are introducing a revolutionary brand that will entertain, inspire and excite children, families and creative minds around the globe," said Peter Moore, corporate vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft Corp. "With Rare and 4Kids Entertainment we will best showcase the vibrant world of 'Viva Piñata,' enabling a mass audience to have an immersive experience via the animated television series, the Xbox 360 title and related merchandise."

"Viva Piñata" — The Animated Television Series

The "Viva Piñata" television series is set to air in the U.S. in fall 2006 on 4Kids TV — 4Kids Entertainment's four hours of children's programming broadcast Saturday mornings on FOX. In this comedy series, created by 4Kids Entertainment, a cast of piñata "friends" embark on wild adventures on Piñata Island. The appealing characters and their charming personalities are sure to entertain and stimulate the series' audience as they accompany the piñata characters on their zany adventures.

"We are very excited about partnering with Microsoft to share the 'Viva Piñata' universe with the world," said Alfred R. Kahn, Chairman and CEO of 4Kids Entertainment. "The potent combination of the Microsoft Game Studios and 4Kids will ensure that the 'Viva Piñata' world, including the video game, television series and merchandising program, attracts a worldwide audience."

"Viva Piñata" for Xbox 360

Set to release this holiday season worldwide, "Viva Piñata" is a customizable, social and spontaneous game that invites players of all ages and skills to explore an immersive world where they are challenged to create and maintain a living garden ecosystem that grows in real time. Beginning with a few basic tools, players build and take control of their environment to attract and host more than 60 species of wild piñata, utilizing hundreds of customizable elements to create their very own distinctively unique thriving paradise.

"Viva Piñata" gameplay continues to evolve with new content available via the Xbox Live® service and the ability to play, trade and interact with more than 2 million gamers via the online service.

Following the strategic alliance previously announced in January 2006 with Microsoft, 4Kids' exclusive representation agreement includes all broadcast, home video, music and merchandise licensing rights on a worldwide basis for the "Viva Piñata" property.

As long as its fun and not to complicated! Finally a game I can play with my children! I miss the old school Mickey Mouse games myself and hope those pop up again one day!

2 - Cool!!

When I first saw it I thought it was another stupid idea like table tennis. But it's actually kinda brilliant now that I read what it's all about. Imagine this generations Pokemon, but on Xbox 360!!

3 - Great idea
exobaby 03.15.2006 15:22
I think this is a fantastic idea, looking at the Xbox360's lineup of games, almost all of them are geared towards older gamers (First Person Shooters, etc). If Microsoft want to broaden their appeal they need more games of this type! It's also going to be a Fox TV show in America so with Fox Merchandising and Marketing it should really help to sell more consoles, well done Microsoft and Rare.

4 - Rare enough said

It's good to see people still believe in pure innocent fun games like this one. Kameo was a nice game and this one is probably going to fit right in. I guess it is Rare (pun intended) to have a company make a variety of games not just one type.

5 - What!
Mighty Boom 03.15.2006 16:16
Not a big fan of kiddie games but I guess the kids need some fun too.

6 - Cool! But I won't buy it...
Unregistered - Doomer 03.15.2006 16:24
Rare is always good with these kind of games but...they need to realize that the xbox 360 is directed more to adults and teens. Not that some adults or teens wouldn't play it, but I just think that they should be working on the next Conker or something! Don't get me wrong, I liked Banjo and Donkey Kong, but I loved Conker. There was a major difference, one was fun and directed towards kids, the other fun and directed towards adults!!! Just sayin: I'm definitely not against kids games at all.

8 - ummm...NO

Sorry, this looks stupid...leave the kiddie games for nintendo microsoft!

9 - Should be a..
Idontknow 03.15.2006 18:35
They should have made it a movie instead of a tv show, or at least a movie first, then a tv show. The characters seem like something out of Pixar, that's why I say that.

10 - ...wow

Wow....Rare just shot themselves in the head. Hello Rare, wtf is Banjo Threeie!?

11 - free ipod, very easy to do

12 - Just because this isnt your type of game doesn't mean it's a bad idea!
Unregistered - ee 03.15.2006 20:32
This is going to be a big series so I don't think they shot themselves in the head at all! We need variety because thats all people would say the original xbox didn't have! This time around MS just seems to be doing just about everything right so let's just wait and see whats in store at E3!

I hope we see more games like this with a nice unique graphics style, for kids or not, if it is fun to play then I will pick it up no matter what.

I'm getting sick of people who think every game should look ultra realistic because in the end all the games will look alike, and thats just boring.

14 - No Me Gusta!!
Unregistered - Not a racist 03.16.2006 00:42
I believe this game is rather racist and should be taken off the market before little kids get ideas. I'm sick and tired of seeing Mexican/Spanish titles in games and movies (like The Mexican with Brad Pitt)and yet not a single latino in it. I mean come on I'm sick and tired of this discrimination against my people. Now we have to feed it into the minds of young children! This is unexceptable!! I'm going to start a movement against this game to be taken off the market before kids can get their little paws on it!

Go back to mexico hater. This game looks good and the Idea is almost original. ( more so than the 50 wwII games out there) I love quirky little games like monster rancher. I think I will be able to have a good time with this game. And i'm sure my kids will have fun watching me play it! lol

Wow why dont you go back to pre school man. You have kids? and you want to play this game? Wow i wonder if your wife knows she married a 9 year old boy?

This is a fantasic move by Microsoft and could easily sell thousands more 360's.

Just look at the Pokemon francise. Nintendo has sold millions and millions of handhelds because of that francise. If it wasn't for Pokemon, Nintendo wouldn't have a firm grip on the Handheld market than it does at the moment!

Microsoft are basicly doing the same thing. Sell the cartoon first, and get a big fanbase. Then release the game to the popular cartoon. See the consoles shift in their thousands. Simple simple mathematics.

Now, the game looks nice, but nothing special although it could be that the previews are in low res, but perfectly fine for kiddies. Look at pokemon, that looks like crap and it still sell's millions.

Plus, this game will be great because it's from Rare! If Microsoft and Rare get this right, they could pull of an amazing feet. A console not just for Adults, but for kiddies as well!

I just wish Banjo 3 was on it's way! Or Jetpac!

Noone cares about your opinion of why someone else shouldn't like this game. Feel free to express your own opinion. While we're at it lets make some more generalizations your a balding, jaded, middle aged man who can no longer relate with a younger generation.

LAGIZZTIC 03.16.2006 12:29
Great consept Microsoft! I love this idea of course it may seam kiddieish but thats the point to entertain. Besides those single with no life wouldn't know this but when your in a relationship or married your woman does not want you to purchase a system cause it takes time from spending with them. So what better way to convince your girl/wife to let you get an xbox360 then use this game against them where her/your kids will bug to death to get it and at same time increases the xbox fan base so great games like Ratchet and Clank can come to the xbox 360. What the ignorant xbox fans dont see is the bigger the fan base grows the more likely big companies will take chances on innovation games and the publishers will spend more money producing games for the xbox360 rather then ps3 or revolution. Think about it!

brilliant idea! if i was still young i would love to play this game. and to say that this is a bad idea is just pathetic. microsoft are trying to cater for all audiences - not just a mature audience. well done RARE!

Islandkiwi 03.16.2006 21:05
The more I read about it, the more I like it. I thought it was going to be a Pokemon thing, but no, it's more like Animal Crossing or the Sims. Microsoft has needed a game like this since day one.

22 - it has begun

I love PDZ, go Rare!

29 - Looks like MS found a niche for Rare
Unregistered - Halo-8 03.19.2006 18:05
I have to say that I thought (and hoped) that this was an April fools joke. Since it is not, it has become clear that MS does not know what to do with Rare. The releases thus far have been relatively sub par, and those that were not have taken YEARS to develop (Kameo was in development for the N64)!!

MS wasted a boat load of ca$h on Rare....and for what?!? VIVA Pinata!??

It is almost laughable.....on second thought it IS laughable.

Well for those of you complaining about the kiddy games don't forget that Microsoft and 4Kids Entertainment Formed an Alliance.

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/news/2006/0117-4kidsalliance.htm

The thing you have to remember is the first Xbox targeted a lot of the older generation of gamers. I myself am 27 years old and I grew up with Nintendo/Sega and a lot of gamers my age did as well. Here's the thing, my generation is more likely to opt for a more adult like console such as the Xbox 360/PS3. However, a lot of people my age have kids as well (including myself). I think it would be great to have a wide variety of children/adult games because after all, the 360 is set up to be the main component of entertainment in the living room (not in a kids room on standard tv). Also add to that, it will entice the mom's and dad's of younger gamers to purchase a 360 for their kids. the more 360's sold, the more developers want to have games published for the 360, thus the more game variety and support for us 360 owners...It's a win win situation overall.
