It’s far from done and details are sketchy, but the portable Xbox is very real. Dean Takahashi of The Mercury News breaks news this morning that Microsoft is working on a portable gaming device that will compete directly with Sony’s PSP and Nintendo’s DS.
According to the report J Allard is leading the team, with Greg Gibson (system designer for Xbox 360) and Bryan Lee (finance chief for Xbox business). Note: The pic in this article is not the real portable Xbox
The Microsoft product would compete with Sony, Nintendo and Apple Computer's products, including the iPod. And Microsoft has some of its most seasoned talent from the division that created its popular Xbox 360 working on it. Game executive J Allard leads the project, and its director is Greg Gibson, who was the system designer on the Xbox 360 video game console. Bryan Lee, the finance chief on the Xbox business, is leading the business side of the project.
By anchoring its entertainment device as a handheld game player, Microsoft is starting from its position of strength in the entertainment business that it hopes Apple cannot match, even with its iPod. The game press has dubbed it an "iPod killer,'' but its functions would likely more closely resemble Sony's PlayStation Portable multimedia gaming device.] Add Comment  1 -

Nice for a portable deviceUnregistered - ee 03.20.2006 12:23 About time someone designed a portable that looks and hopefully feels like a normal controller! Im not sure how this would kill the Ipod though because I can't imagine wearing a controller around my neck at the gym but then again the ipods are kind of big! With the console wars episode 2 going on it seems as though MS is the only company doing everything to innovate and improve gaming for everyone, and thats not being bias! Sure Nintendo has there controller but the 360's is so perfect I can't imagine anything better anytime soon! Also if im correct isn't bluray going to be used for HD cutscenes in games because I thought the next generation was about getting rid of cutscenes and letting you control your experience(splintercell, halo3,halflife2) which leads me to believe that this is why MS went with DVD's! I also hope this thing is like an advanced dreamcast controller were u can raise your characters like Sonic or solves puzzles like J.Allard mentioned at last years E3! The PS3 release date is good news I guess for anybody that wants one but my main concern is how do you preorder something and you don't even know what the games are going to look like! Are people loosing it I mean theres no proof and no pudding but yes there is a recipe and nobody knows what it will taste like! Im not buying one or reserving one until I get a little taste of something and see some actual specs, but then again there is the ebay option just to play it safe! 11 -

PAUL CERULA 03.20.2006 14:04 Above everything they may promise I really want this XBP(xbox portable) to be COMFORTABLE. The PSP absolutely blows in comfort, all jaggy edges, rigid plastic, and definately not ergonimic enough. The fake pic above would be perfect, i could care less if it couldn't fit like an uncomfortable book shape or slim figure, just give me performance and comfort. It would be awesome if they integrated nintendo's idea of being able to use it as a console controller also. With tht design it could be a fully functional x360 controller as well as a protable xbox on the road. One thing is a must though, it have built in flash memory to be used for storage and a large amount too. This would also increase battery life as there would be no hard drive spinning. But they must also learn from where Sony screwed up: Full media playback acapabilities as well as some damn games. Sonys propriety crap(umd)is garbage and there have been no where near that amount of games that there should be for a portable gaming system. If microsoft is able to do that as well as bring psp-level(at least) graphics then this would be the sh!t. 32 -

I can't call it monopolizing justbecause a company will do anything to satisfy the consumer. It would be a different story if the products they put out were garbage. Microsoft changed the face of videogames and made them fun again. Even the untimely death of the Dreamcast, which was destroyed by Sony's hyperbole and false promises, didn't make me submit to Sony's PS2. I just wasn't feeling the PS2 console. If Microsoft hadn't entered the videogame industry I would have become a casual gamer. But I am still a hardcore gamer thanks to Xbox and Xbox Live. So the next time you want to argue about a company continuously delivering on quality and innovations, imagine how it would be to play the Playstation2 until the year 2012 and still pay 150 bucks for obsolete hardware that probably would only cost Sony 20 bucks to manufacture. This handheld is a big deal to some of us and I personally like how MS is doing whatever to keep the console space so interesting and so is Sony as far as marketing goes but I still see them as followers and not leaders and have my reasons to view it that way even though they were #1 the last two generations! 60 -
