If you don’t yet know about Spore, you will soon enough, along with every other inhabitants of this planet. Spore is the next big game from Will Wright , the man behind the ridiculously successful game The SIMS. Spore is easily the most anticipated PC title currently in development, and now it looks like console gamers also will be able to enjoy Will Wright’s masterpiece on their favourite console. Though it must be said that the news is not yet official, the message was pretty clear when Gamespy in a recent interview asked Wright if Spore was still PC only. “Well, actually we are going to go on all platforms, but we will come out on PC first. We will even come out on cell phones and stuff. One of the things in the game is that as you go around and encounter things… creatures and plants, or whatever, you make trading cards of each thing. That is the metaphor for the database -- trading cards. So you can collect your cards. You can print them out. You can now play your own card game. That might be like the cell phone part. That stuff is so light. It's more about collectability as opposed to interaction. Every creature in the PC game is three or four megabytes. But the cards, that is the database that the player is building." So if Will Wright’s own words is anything to go by, and I don’t see how it is not, Spore is definitely heading for next-gen consoles including the Xbox 360. Unregistered - Fuzz McDeath 05.17.2006 10:21 I think MS should make this a Pilot program for Live Anywhere as they role that functionality out with Windows Vista. Playing the full game on 360 or PC and trading cards and stuff on your cell phone - probably work quite well. The way he describes it, they sound like different games that are related but separated by platform. With Live Anywhere they could be connected across platforms instead. Not my cup of tea, but chicks and "collector" types would eat it up. Unregistered - Justin 05.17.2006 11:07 Looking at these pics doesn't describe the game. This game is huge in scale. This will be the biggest selling game ever! I won't explain the whole premise, but if you have half a brain you will see that this game will rule the rest. The game has nothing to do with trading cards, thats just a by-product of all the stuff players can create. They figured they would make each item have a card that describes its attributes and who made it, easy to keep track of, in game, and kids can collect them if they like, out of game. So those of you that just say, "this game is gonna suck", must be Halo fanboys that think any game that doesn't have Master Chief in it is lame. DOLBY DI GA TAL pf 05.18.2006 00:34 Spore is a computer and video game designed by Will Wright that simulates the complete history and future of life. The game was first revealed and demonstrated to the public during a speech on procedural generation at the 2005 Game Developers Conference. It is currently being developed by Maxis and is scheduled to be published by Electronic Arts by April or early May 2007 at the earliest (confirmed by Will Wright in Gamespy interview), though no definite release date has been announced. Spore is, at first glance, a 'teleological evolution' game: the player molds and guides a species across many generations, growing it from a single-celled organism into a more complex animal, until the species becomes intelligent. At this point the player begins molding and guiding this species' society, progressing towards a spacefaring civilization. Spore's main innovation portends to be Wright's use of procedural generation for many of the components of the game, providing vast scope and open-endedness. Wright said "I didn't want to make players feel like Luke Skywalker or Frodo Baggins. I wanted them to be like George Lucas or J.R.R. Tolkien." Some early in-game screenshots and videos suggest that the following editors will be released for use directly in-game. Will Wright stated that all the editors would be as similar as possible for easy use. There are several different editors, though they all deal with different points in time. At E3 2006, Wright showcased the Creature Editor. This allows you to take what looks like a lump of clay with a spine and mold it into a creature of your choosing. Once you're done molding the main form, you can then add legs, arms, feet, hands, eyes, mouths, decorative elements, and a wide array of sensory organs like antennae. Once you get it shaped the way you like it, you can paint your creature using a large amount of textures, colors, and patterns. After you feel your creature is complete, you can test it out in a small closed environment. An important thing to note is that much of the calculations on movement are made on the fly. "The game automatically knows how to animate your creature based on how you put it together. For example, if you give your creature four equine legs, you can logically expect it to gallop around like a horse"[2] There is also a hut editor, building editor (for a later stage), a vehicle editor, and even a plant editor. After the player gains access to UFOs, they even gain the ability to terraform whole planets to their liking. [edit] Procedural generation In Wright's first public demonstration of Spore, he created a tripedal creature in the creature evolution editor. The game then figured out how a lizard with three legs and a prehensile tail should walk. Wright then showed several pre-made creatures which moved realistically, despite their exotic design: insectile creatures with multiple heads and six legs, a walking bird whose massive head caused it to tilt while turning, and a dog-like creature with a set of unusual branching limbs. He also demonstrated a creature that looked exactly like a Care Bear, indicating that players could create animals similar to those found in nature or popular culture. There hasn't been much direct information released regarding the technology Spore uses to procedurally generate its creatures and worlds. Wright mentioned in an interview given at E3 2006 that the information necessary to represent an entire creature can be stored in 3 kilobytes worth of data, resulting in a compression of 20,000:1. The demonstration of the editor leads one to speculate it uses an Implicit surface representation such as Metaballs combined with a skeleton for animation. Chris Hecker who currently works on Spore including it's early prototypes gave a presentation at GDC 2005 and Futureplay entitled "Why you should have paid attention in multivariable calculus" in which he describes the mathematics of Implicit surface and methods to apply texture projections to them. Sean O'Neil[3] worked as a consultant for Maxis "to assist with R&D development involving dynamic generation and rendering of fractal-based world". He maintains a website[4] with demonstration of procedural planet generation and simulation of dynamic atmospheric scattering. [edit] Other game mechanics Spore will be a simulation that "ranges from the cellular level to the galactic level". In his GDC speech, Will Wright likened the style of game-play of each phase to an existing game: Tide pool phase, similar to Pac-Man Creature phase, Diablo Tribal phase, Populous City phase, SimCity Civilization phase, Risk and Civilization Space phase (a.k.a. UFO stage or Invasion), with some elements reminiscent of Destroy All Humans!, and later sandbox gameplay. Each phase of the game determines the starting point of the next phase. In the GDC presentation, the creature that Will Wright was presented with upon the transition to that phase, was based on his earlier cell creature (in having 2 legs, a tail, eyes and mouth in roughly the same positions.) He also mentioned that how each phase is played develops the creatures personality, talking about how the creatures could be logical or emotional based on the Tribal Phase. [edit] Tide Pool Phase This is the starting point of the game, where you are a micro-organism. In this phase, you have to swim around a 2D environment 'eating' other cells that are weaker than you. There are at least 3 other types of cells, 2 of which can eat you to begin with. Once you have eaten several cells, you can lay an egg and use the Creature Editor to change your appearance, bone structure and abilities. This includes adding more weapons, which allow you to eat more and die less. Each time you progress to the next generation, you grow larger. Once you reach a certain size, you leave the 2D world of the Microscopic and enter the Creature Phase. [edit] Creature Phase This phase is a very important one since this is when you really get to decide what your race will look like and how they will behave. It is very similar to the tide pool phase. However, there are several important differences. The most obvious one is that it is a 3D environment. You will see many other creatures around you, and they will nearly all have been created by other players. If you have a lack of predators in your ecosystem and weak herbivores are everywhere, the game will automatically download a new race of predators that another player has created and load them into your world. You begin this phase underwater. The appearance of your creature is roughly based on the cell you created in the tide pool phase. The basic goal is the same: Hunt food to earn DNA points and avoid being eaten by predators. Depending on how you have created your creature, advancing to the next generation can be slightly harder than before. If your creature is very solitary and there are very few others of your race, you just have to find enough food and lay an egg. However, if you are a more social creature, you must also find a mate. Even once you have laid an egg, it doesn't just hatch straight away. Scavengers will attempt to steal them and you have to fight them off. Once you have evolved a little, it is quite easy to grow limbs instead of fins and move onto land, if you want to. When you first move to another generation, you start life as a baby of your race. You must find other children and group together so that you can hunt some food. The eventual goal of this phase is to increase your brain size or intelligence. Once you have reached a certain point, your race becomes sentient and you progress to the Tribal Phase. Before you do this, you should make any changes to your creature that you want, since this is the last time that you can directly influence it. [edit] Tribal Phase In this phase of the game, several members of your race have banded together and created a tribal hut. Instead of editing your actual race, you can now choose what items you wish to buy for them. What you choose now effects several things, including whether they are logical or emotional. Also, you can direct your tribesmen to search the forest for food, or to meet with other tribes. If you do find other tribes, you can either attempt to trade with them and get more supplies, or raid their settlement and steal some. Once you have enough points, you can buy upgrades to your tribal hut. This is when you get to use the Hut Editor to change how it looks. The appearance of your hut will most likely change what your city looks like later on. The goal is to get the highest level hut, then your tribe will build more buildings and create a town/city. [edit] City Phase Most of this phase can be described simply by saying that it is based on SimCity. Basically, your people have certain needs such as wanting more schools, more shops etc, and you have to try your best to satisfy them. While you're doing this, you can use the Building Editor to change the appearance of the buildings in your city. Like when the game detected what creatures were needed to balance the ecosystem in the creature phase, it will now detect what style of buildings you prefer, download similar ones created by other players and add them to the buy menu. Although no one has specifically said how you finish this phase, it appears that once you have a large enough city it will allow you to advance further. [edit] Civilization Phase This is the phase when you truly begin to see how you have influenced the behaviour of your species. You can still use the Building Editor and buy new buildings in this phase. Once you reach this point you are allowed to zoom out further for the first time, and take a look at your entire planet from space. Once your zoom out past a certain point, your city changes from a properly-scaled view with all the buildings visible to a more cartoony view, more like an icon. Once you zoom out and start looking about, you will notice that you are not alone. Like in the Tribal Stage, you can go and meet the other species in other cities and either try diplomacy to open trade routes and eventually form an alliance or attack them. The difference here is that instead of sending just people, you can use the Vehicle Editor to design any sort of vehicle. This means you can make Land Vehicles, Air Vehicles, Water Vehicles and even submarines. However, when first approaching another city, you should always be careful since it is often hard to tell whether they are agressive or not. If you are caught by surprise, you may not have time to build enough defenses to save your city if/when they attack you. The goal here is to gain control of the entire planet, whether you conquered it with war or made an alliance through giving them gifts. Once this is done, you unlock the 'UFO' and the UFO Editor. [edit] Space Phase This section is missing references or citation of sources. You can help Wikipedia by introducing appropriate citations. This is the last phase of the game, but it never really ends. This is a huge Sandbox mode, although it does start off quite small. When you first build your UFO, it has limited abilities, but it does allow you to zoom out further than your homeworld and see your whole solar system. Although your abilities are limited, they are far greater than before, and you can do anything you want with them. You will probably want to spend a little time messing about with the Tractor Beam and anything else you start with. Instead, you should explore the other planets in your solar system, and begin to colonize them. If a planet has no atmosphere your UFO has various tools for terraforming it in order to make it support life. (These kind of tools are used for molding a planet into what you want it to be. As an example, Will Wright once used a gadget called the Genesis Device in a video of Spore's gameplay in 2005. The device forms an atmosphere, making the planet habitable). For every planet you encounter while playing the game, the game creates a card that you can access when you have the UFO. You can scan creatures and create cards for them also. The game organizes the cards into a database called "Sporepedia" and you will automatically have cards for your home planet. What you are trying to do is gain enough points to construct an Interstellar Drive. This can be done in several ways. The first is by finding alien technology on a dead planet and beaming it up. This will not only give you points but it will also give you a new ability. If you find exploration boring, then you could try abducting creatures from other planets and putting them on a different one, or even start up a Cross-Breeding program. The final option that is definitely available is finding another sentient civilization, and doing the usual things (Trading/Conquering) or you could attempt to make them worship you. Once you have created the Interstellar Drive, you realize just how open ended the game truly is. First, you can zoom out to view your little corner of the galaxy. In this view you can see about 100, maybe 200 stars. This means about 200-600 worlds. Your mouse pointer becomes a SETI device to listen for radio waves and find sentient life, but that is your only guide. But then, you zoom out more, and find that you can see the entire galaxy. According to Will Wright, this galaxy is going to include roughly 500,000 stars, and millions of worlds. Basically, the Space phase comes down to this: While there will be no goals set by the game, the player can make up their own games and goals to play out, such as terraforming other planets, or being 'Big Brother' to another alien race by watching over them and helping them along in secret. This was described as reversing the gaming convention of freeform tutorial modes followed by goal-oriented endgames. Spore is much more goal-oriented (survive, eat, reproduce, etc.) in its early stages and gets more open-ended and free-form as the game unfolds. At the Space phase the player will have access to all of the editors, as well as others such as a 'Genesis Device' that instantly changes a dead planet into a lush paradise, and even adds in an atmosphere, all within a few minutes. Will Wright referred to this style of open-endedness as a "T" game style, referencing the relatively linear path until the galactic stage of the game where the game switches to greater open-endedness. [edit] "Massively single-player" Wright calls the game a "massively single-player online game". Simultaneous multiplayer gaming is not a feature of Spore. The creatures, vehicles, and buildings the player can create will be uploaded automatically to a central database (or a peer-to-peer system), cataloged and rated for quality (based on how many users have downloaded the object or creature in question), and then re-distributed to populate other players' games. The data transmitted will be extremely small — only a couple of kilobytes, according to Wright, who presented an analogy: think of it as sharing the DNA template of a creature while the game, like a womb, builds the "phenotypes" of the animal, which represent a few megabytes of texturing, animation, etc. [edit] Development The official logo of Spore.A supposedly temporary Spore logo was leaked on GamingSteve.com by the site's owner, and while a different logo has been displayed on both the Maxis website and the official Spore website for some time (as part of the introduction video), the logo featured on Gaming Steve was given to the site owner long after the Spore website's introduction was created. Will Wright originally intended to call the game Sim Everything, but needed a codename to use during the development process. Over time, however, the team came to prefer the name Spore, as it fit the game very well. He went on to state in an interview that "not putting 'Sim' in front of it" was "very refreshing". Steve Glicker of http://gamingsteve.com/ [Gaming Steve] has leaked four Spore concept art images: Image 1 Image 2 Image 3 Image 4 Speculation that the game may be released for the Xbox 360 gained ground after an Xbox executive mentioned Spore, along with other games, when talking about innovative games for the 360 [5], though there had been another (pre-360 release) statement by Stephen Glicker. [http://www.gamingsteve.com/blab/index.php?topic=209.0. Will Wright has expressed interest in Nintendo's Wii console, this could mean a port of Spore for Wii. More recently, evidence of a version of Spore for handhelds surfaced in a Maxis job listing looking for a developer for a portable version. Maxis Senior Development Director Eric Todd said at his lecture at GDC 2006 that Spore is "not shipping on [consoles with] controllers...yet." Will Wright made a reference to Kid Pix during the terraforming demonstration. Kid Pix is an educational art program designed for children aged five to twelve. The Spore website's flash navigation contains a hidden Easter egg [6] showing Will Wright in the game development room with what appears to be posters of influences and Spore-related artwork. Wright snuck a Spore design document into an issue of Wired Magazine in February 2004 (see the "Evolve! Will Wright's Grand Unified Theory" linked below). Following several years of development, Spore was first introduced to the public on March 11, 2005 in Wright's lecture about "procedural content generation" at the Game Developers Conference. It was officially unveiled two months later at E3 2005, the industry's annual trade show. GDC 2006 featured two Spore related talks, Building Community Around Pollinated Content in Spore and "Spore: Preproduction Through Prototyping. A video released on YouTube (1) shows "unedited footage of Spore that will be going to TV networks covering E3 [2006]", and includes a rehauled creature editor, a first look at the texturing tools, as well as glimpses at other aspects of the game. Will Wright has said that the game was also influenced by many TV shows, movies, and toys, such as Lego and Star Wars. Fight Night is good, but once I got done with the career mode (took me less than a week the first time, was worth redoing about twice more, and it went a bit faster those times), the online didn't really grab me (I lost 3 of 6, the other three the other player quit immediately after being knocked down, and I couldn't find an option to submit a player review when that happened). If you haven't given Oblivion a shot yet, I really recommend it, most people love it. If you're not sure about it, I'd still suggest a rental. Xtrm L1481L1TY 05.19.2006 11:00 I was watching E3 on G4TV when they interviewed the guy who created this game. Apparently it's the same guy who created the Sims and all those other Sims games so expect the same kind of gameplay. I personally never cared much for the Sims but it's been very (VERY) popular for some odd reason. More power to more game selection. ;) PAUL CERULA 05.19.2006 14:05 WATCH THIS TRAILER, IT CRACKS ME UP EVERY TIME http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/2293 http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/2293 http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/2293 http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/2293 LOL Unregistered - sdtgfxfhcfh 05.19.2006 14:27 i don't no if you know that Valve the makers of half life 2, counter strike source, day of defeat: source are making games for the xbox 360. btw half life 2 can be played on the xbox 1 showing that you don't need to have that much of a powerful console to run it. anyway, this game does not look as the most inovation game i have seen in time. sure its big and very long. its very big on the scale. but its not that original as many people say. i suppose it is time for games to get bigger and better but many game studios have been doing these sorts of games for years, its just that the scale of their games were alot smaller. still it has the potenial to sell and play very well. Unregistered - 05.19.2006 15:05 The world as we know it is really just someone playing Spore. Unregistered - Brent 05.20.2006 13:51 How can you guys be so ignorant? I've been reading comments about how "this game looks retarded" or "terrible graphics" or "gears of war is better". This game may not have the visual asthetics but it is a huge breakthrough in game design. People are bored of bigger better graphics... they want immersive game play. Stop trying to define a video game as "looking good" - it's game play that sells. I bet spore out sells gears of war, bioshock, prey, and MGS4 assjacket 05.20.2006 19:10 i agree with Brent RavenSlayer 117 05.21.2006 00:25 Finaly a gamer that has some brains. No offence 67 your cool too. I think all you need to grow up and learn if you just want graphics go get a PS3. Because thats all PS3 has over 360 and thats it. Stop saying that a game will suck because its graphics aren't the best. WHO CARES! I want a game with great game play like the old Mario for the NES. All you retards grow up. Trickedbullet 05.22.2006 23:03 Spore looks pretty cool. I love strategy games like Black and White 2, Command and Conquer, Ground Control 2, Age of Empires... Half-Life was really the first game of its type. Before Half-Life there wasnt anything really like it. FPS games existed, but not to the same degree of realism. Realism is what made the Original Half-Life so awsome. Half-Life 2 is actually less impressive than the original Half-Life as they removed all the blood and gore that Half-Life had.(Remember the realism? Half Life 2 added physics, but removed the sploding bodies, blood, and skulls.) OFF TOPIC: Any one Notice that Halo 2 on 360 has a burn-in like error in it still? In single player mode if you look into the sky you can see the words "Xbox Live Signin" and a faint dark box with lines. It is also present during Covenant Cut scenes. IN coop play the chechpoint system went haywire. On the second level the hunters do not come out and you must go on top of the buildings to get by. No check points trigger and when you get to the end, the xbox live screen appears and makes it almost impossible to see the game. The sound also started dual playing of tracks in the game itself. I thought such errors were fixed? Unregistered - buck 05.23.2006 14:35 #35 is a looser, I wish people would stop buying garbage games like these, so the developers would stop making lame a$$ games such as these.
