Study Claims Playing Video Games Improves The Brain
Submitted By: Trickedbullet
13 Feb 2006 06:02 | Technology

In contrast to all the so-called studies claiming playing games with violent content will inspire real violent, this article on the Globe and Mail web site states that a York University study shows that playing games might actually improve brain activity. Here is a snip: A new study of 100 university undergraduates in Toronto has found that video gamers consistently outperform their non-playing peers in a series of tricky mental tests. If they also happened to be bilingual, they were unbeatable. "The people who were video game players were better and faster performers," said psychologist Ellen Bialystok, a research professor at York University. "Those who were bilingual and video game addicts scored best -- particularly at the most difficult tasks." Thanks to Evil Avatar for the heads-up. I just thought such news would tickle every ones fancy. News like this just makes me proud to be a gamer! ;)

Just as Far Cry redefined real-time graphics on the PC, Far Cry Instincts PREDATOR promises to the same on next-generation consoles. Ubisoft has rewritten many of the shaders used in vegetation and water and improved the lighting model, taking advantage of Xbox 360's multi-core next-generation engine for improved performance. Just check out this new video that compares the water as seen on Far Cry Instincts PREDATOR on the Xbox 360 and Far Cry for the PC, with Ultra High settings applied for both water and lighting. Believe it or not, the water looks considerably better on the Xbox 360 as a result of the new filters and shaders written exclusively for this version. 11 Feb 2006 20:38 | Xbox 360

The second wave of content is starting to roll around for Xbox Live Arcade on the Xbox 360, and Marble Blast Ultra is one of the featured titles. The basic premise is to roll a shiny marble around various floating platforms that house all manner of power-ups, pitfalls, and puzzles. Each platform puzzle has a “par time” associated with it, and the goal is to not only beat the level, but also to beat it under par time. While the game design may be somewhat simplistic, and the attached multiplayer mode may only work for some, Marble Blast Ultra still manages to provide a great challenge to those who want it.

10 Feb 2006 15:21 | Xbox 360

During his DICE session, Moore touched on some key Xbox 360 issues such as shortages and Xbox Live. Moore also reiterated some previously released Xbox Live stats: 54 percent of Xbox 360 owners use Xbox Live, compared to 10 percent for the original Xbox. "Our goal is to maintain that all the way through XBox 360's life-cycle." He said there have been 4 million pieces of content downloaded from Xbox Live since launch. He talked about Xbox Live Arcade and the success of the try-before-you-buy model. He used the example of Geometry Wars (pictured), for which 36 percent of consumers who downloaded the demo bought the game. The average Xbox Live Arcade conversion is 20 percent, with the lowest conversion rate for a game being 10 percent. "Nothing normally converts from sample to purchase at a rate of 35 percent. It's proof positive that we are dragging gaming into the online era." He described Xbox live arcade as "The Sundance of independent games."

Speaking at a panel discussion in Mountain View, California last night, Microsoft corporate VP Peter Moore prophesied the eventual death of physical game media, according to GameSpot, which quoted Moore as saying, "Let's be fair. Whether it's five, 10, 15, 20 years from now, the concept of driving to the store to buy a plastic disc with data on it and driving back and popping it in the drive will be ridiculous.... We'll tell our grandchildren that and they'll laugh at us."
